There is so much good in Godzilla (1998) that is overlooked by many Movie Critics as well as Godzilla fans. You have better acting than that of the Japanese versions (Even, Godzilla Final Wars), better special effects, great sound quality, the best advertising campaign of the 1990s, and a design for Godzilla. The climate in the movie is dark and rainy but, with a warm urban tone to it. People forget that many Godzilla films (1960’s) don’t even come up to standard with Godzilla 1998.
Design
The design for Godzilla does take a totally new direction but it sticks to the same spirit of Godzilla (1954).
Baby Godzilla!
In the movie it turns out Godzilla is asexual, and is pregnant. The same thing happens in the movie The Son of Godzilla. To be honest, some fans say that there were two Godzilla and that they produced an egg but this has not been officially confirmed from Toho. Nevertheless, it does no harm to the film, and shouldn’t be a major deal. And just to tell let everyone know, Toho was also informed of this and they gave it the “O.K.”. During the Madison Square Garden scene where the Baby Godzilla’s are loose it does bare some resemblance to 1993’s Jurassic Park but for the most is different.
The 1998 film Godzilla maintains the original Godzilla formula, which is what we have done in the past and what we have done to environment will come back to haunt us.
Toho is often victimized by many original Godzilla hardliners, but if any should be to blame for Godzilla let it be Toho themselves. Toho was entirely informed of every detail of the film including plot and script. Roland Emmerich went before Toho studios in Japan in 1997 and it was then that year that Godzilla 1998 was set into motion. Yes, Toho gave some guidelines but they were informed of the changes and even stuff that went against the guidelines.
Four stars out of Six.
